The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has categorically refuted speculations suggesting an impending sacking of Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, ahead of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Cote d’Ivoire.
The rumours, fueled by concerns over the team’s recent performance, were dismissed by the GFA’s Director of Communication, Henry Asante Twum.
Mr. Asante Twum clarified the GFA’s position, stating, “On the verge of sacking him, with nine days to the AFCON 2023? No! Chris is under a contract. We respect the contract. We have thrown our weight behind him, and all of us have decided to put our shoulders to the wheel to make him successful in Cote d’Ivoire.”
He emphasized the support Hughton enjoys from the GFA leadership and staff, highlighting that the coach works in a conducive and respectful environment.
Mr. Asante Twum assured that the GFA has provided everything Hughton requested and expressed confidence in the coach’s abilities.
Addressing concerns raised by the public and media, Mr. Asante Twum acknowledged that questions about the coach’s status might stem from social media, radio, and TV discussions.
However, he reiterated the GFA’s unwavering confidence in Hughton and stressed that the coach’s competence, experience, and the challenges faced have been duly considered.
“A manager of his calibre and experience, we do not doubt his competence. Results have not been favorable in recent times, which he knows,” Mr. Asante Twum added, indicating that despite acknowledged challenges, the GFA has no plans to terminate Hughton’s contract.
The GFA aims to stand by the coach and work towards a successful campaign in the upcoming AFCON tournament.
