Four Members of Parliament (MPs), including two serving ministers, and five media practitioners are among 1,568 newly qualified lawyers called to the Ghana Bar.

The ceremony, held on Friday, October 9, 2026, marked the formal admission of the new lawyers to the legal profession after they met the enrolment requirements.

The MPs called to the Ghana Bar are Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram and Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations; Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources; Davis Ansah Opoku, MP for Mpraeso; and Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, MP for Awutu Senya East.

The five media personalities are Channel One TV and Citi FM journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu, Joy News journalist Ayisha Ibrahim, actress and TV3 presenter Naa Ashorkor Duodu, EIB Network General Manager Rev. Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, and founder of the Evening Mail Nana Kwasi Asuman-Frimpong.

Welcoming the new lawyers and other dignitaries, Judicial Secretary Musah Ahmed described the call to the Bar as an important transition from legal education to professional practice.

He explained that the General Legal Council (GLC), under Section 7 of the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), is mandated to convene formal meetings for the enrolment and admission of qualified applicants to the Ghana Bar.

Mr Ahmed said the ceremony represented more than the completion of an academic journey, stressing that legal practice required diligence, sacrifice and support from family members.

He also reminded the newly admitted lawyers that their entry into the profession comes with a responsibility to uphold the rule of law and respect the principles governing the administration of justice.

“As you prepare to receive your certificates, you do not only do so as an individual who has met an exacting standard, but also as officers of the court,” he said.

The call to the Bar formally recognises qualified candidates as members of Ghana’s legal profession, with the expectation that they will discharge their professional duties in accordance with the law and the ethical standards of the profession.

The admission of the four MPs and five media practitioners highlights the growing presence of public officials and media professionals among those pursuing legal training alongside their existing careers.
