The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to investigate the US$243 million expenditure on the 13th African Games Ghana is hosting and the controversies surrounding it, when it comes to power.
This follows growing discontent over the event’s handling by the Akufo-Addo government.
NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, voicing the party’s concerns, criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for what he says is gross mismanagement and financial imprudence in the organization of the games.
“The amount of money the government has sunk into the games without adequate return is alarming. We are witnessing a series of unfortunate events that not only embarrass our nation but also raise questions about the integrity of the current administration’s management practices,” Sammy Gyamfi stated.
The NDC’s grievances stem from a series of setbacks that have tarnished the reputation of the 13th African Games, including South Africa’s withdrawal of its hockey teams due to the poor condition of Ghana’s facilities, and the withdrawal of Ghana’s Cycling Champion, Michael Naaba, attributed to equipment failure.
The national swimming team’s exit from the 4×100 relay final has also raised eyebrows, with undisclosed reasons for their withdrawal.
Sammy Gyamfi emphasized the athletes’ dissatisfaction with the preparations and the shortage of equipment, pointing to the disproportionate expenditure of USD$195 million on pre-games arrangements and an additional USD$48 million for logistics, which he argues, has failed to yield positive results.
The NDC demanded the immediate dismissal of the Minister of Youth and Sports, the dissolution of the Local Organizing Committee, a thorough forensic audit of the games’ budget and expenditures, and a parliamentary probe into the event’s financial and organizational management.
“These actions are crucial for restoring transparency and accountability in the management of public funds and events.”
“The NDC is committed to ensuring that Ghanaians receive answers for the missteps and alleged corruption that has overshadowed what should have been a proud moment for our nation,” he added.
