The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday defeated the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in their second match in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
The lone goal of the match was scored by defender and team captain, William Troost-Ekong, in the 55th minute of the game.
Troost-Ekong converted the penalty awarded to the Super Eagles when Victor Osimhen was fouled by the Ivorian defender inside the 18-yard box.
With this score line, the Super Eagles have 4 points, having played a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their first match in Group A.
The Equatorial Guinea team, which defeated Guinea Bissau 4-2 earlier on Thursday have 4 points with goal difference of plus 2 now top Group A, while Nigeria with also 4 points and 1 goal advantage are placed second.
The host nation, Cote d’Ivoire are third in Group A with their opening 2-0 victory against Guinea Bissau on Sunday, while Guinea Bissau are placed fourth with no points.
Nigeria will take on Guinea Bissau in their third and last group match, while Cote d’Ivoire will host Equatorial Guinea.
