Nigeria secured their spot in the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 by defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in a crucial match on Monday.
The lone goal came in the 36th minute when Opa Sangante turned a Moses Simon cross into his own net.
With this result, the Super Eagles finish second in Group A with seven points, trailing behind Equatorial Guinea, whose 4-0 win against Ivory Coast secured their top spot with a superior goal difference.
Nigeria, having drawn 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea in their opener, followed up with a 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast with a William Troost-Ekong penalty before clinching this crucial win.
The team will now face the runners-up in Group C (Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon) in the last-16 tie on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
Although Nigeria dominated before the goal, they couldn’t extend their lead in the second half.
Osimhen and Sanusi had offside goals, Bassey’s penalty appeal was denied, and Aina missed a good chance. Guinea-Bissau’s Dju had a goal ruled out, concluding their tournament with three defeats.
Despite shocking Nigeria in qualifying last March, Guinea-Bissau remains winless in 12 Cup of Nations appearances.
