The Democracy Under Attack protest is taking place today, Thursday, August 6, as the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) stages a nationwide demonstration to highlight what it describes as growing threats to Ghana’s democratic governance, civil liberties and the rule of law.
The protest begins at 6:00 a.m. from the Supreme Court in Accra and concludes at the Jubilee House, according to promotional materials released by the party.
Organisers have urged supporters to participate under the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow and #SayNoToStateCapture, describing the demonstration as a peaceful effort to defend Ghana’s democratic institutions.

According to the party, the NPP Democracy Under Attack protest is intended to draw national attention to concerns over alleged restrictions on free expression, the treatment of opposition voices and what the party believes are increasing threats to democratic accountability.
In a Facebook post ahead of the demonstration, spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and member of the NPP communications team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, said the protest seeks to resist what he described as attempts to silence dissent and weaken democratic values.
“There is always the temptation by people in power to suppress the voices and rights of the people. But there is an inherent self-purge with democracy. Try as you may, you can never suppress the will of the people,” he wrote.
Mr Aboagye further alleged that what he described as the arrest of opposition voices, the detention of individuals over alleged insults, the arrest of some TikTok users and media practitioners, the use of bail conditions and concerns regarding the relationship between the Executive and the Judiciary collectively pose risks to Ghana’s democratic system.
He called for equal application of the law and urged state authorities to avoid what he termed selective justice.
“Let’s stop the selective justice now before it becomes a cycle. Power is like ice…. Live and let’s live… that’s the beauty of democracy,” he added.
The opposition insists the Democracy Under Attack protest is aimed at defending civil liberties, strengthening the rule of law and promoting democratic accountability.
The government has, however, rejected allegations that it is targeting political opponents. It maintains that state institutions operate independently and that all law enforcement actions are carried out in accordance with due process and the laws of Ghana.
As the NPP Democracy Under Attack protest unfolds, political observers are expected to closely monitor participation, security arrangements and reactions from both government officials and civil society groups.
