New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary hopeful, Dr Charles Dwamena, affectionately known as Dr China, has assured that the party will not abandon Wontumi.
He said he respects the court’s decision and believes in the rule of law, but urged the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, to take advantage of the available legal processes to challenge the conviction.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, he said the NPP is a law-abiding political party and would respect the outcome of the judicial process while encouraging the party’s Ashanti Chairman, popularly called Wontumi, to pursue all available legal avenues.

“I have not really had the opportunity of reading the entire judgment. But this is what I have to say. We believe in the rule of law. The courts have spoken.”
“I am a law-abiding citizen of this country. NPP is a law-abiding entity in the country. We are the champions of the rule of law,” Dr Dwamena said.
Dr Dwamena urges Wontumi to appeal
Dr. China, the current NPP national treasurer, said that respect for the rule of law should also include recognising an accused person’s right to appeal a court decision.
He encouraged Wontumi to take advantage of the available legal processes to challenge the conviction.
“In the same way, we also believe in the right of appeal. In fact, I would like to encourage Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako to consider that right, take it up, and then pursue it further,” he said.
Dr Dwamena stressed that the NPP will not abandon Wontumi and assured him they will continue to support him as a member of the party.
“This is a time that is challenging for him, so we give him the strength to go through such a challenging situation. That’s exactly what I would recommend for him,” he said,
He urged Wontumi to use the available legal avenues to seek a favourable resolution to the matter and eventually return home to his family.
