The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Okaikwei Central (OKC) Communication Bureau embarked on a poignant mission of healing and unity on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the 5th anniversary of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence.
The day’s event remains a stark reminder of the challenges facing Ghana’s democratic processes.
In a gesture aimed at transforming the sombre memory into a symbol of hope, the bureau visited Comrade Ishau Yaro, a victim of the violent disturbances that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
The delegation, led by NDC OKC Communication Officer Ibrahim Osumanu Samandulgu and including Deputy Communication Officer Reuben Kofi Obrey, Deputy Women’s Organizer Salomey Ayiteyfio, and the Assembly member for the area, Mahfuz Mohammed, carried relief items as well as messages of solidarity to Ishau Yaro, popularly called Alhaji Baba.
Despite bearing the scars of the past, Yaro’s spirit shone with resilience, further brightened by the visit.
The relief items, including a bag of rice, cooking oil, packs of water, and an undisclosed sum of money, represented the constituency’s widow’s mite.
However, the exchange transcended the physical donations, embodying a moment of profound communal healing.
Ibrahim, speaking with heartfelt sincerity, assured Yaro of the community’s ongoing support, affirming the visit as a testament to their steadfast solidarity.
Ishau Yaro expressed gratitude not only for the tangible gifts but also for the reminder that he is not alone in his recovery.
This act of compassion served as a beacon of hope, not just for Yaro but for the entire community, signifying a collective commitment to peace, unity, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, held on January 31, 2019, following the passing of MP Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, saw Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party emerging victorious amidst a backdrop of violence at the La-Bawaleshie polling station.
The assault, perpetrated by individuals alleged to be National Security Operatives, led to 18 people, including Yaro, suffering gunshot wounds, with Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George among those assaulted.
