The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has received three petitions concerning extortion allegations against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and will assess the matter to determine whether it falls within the agency’s statutory mandate.
The petitions relate to allegations made by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi against the Minority Leader.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the OSP said it had received a joint petition submitted by two individuals, as well as two separate petitions from other persons, all concerning the allegations.

The anti-corruption agency said it had taken note of the public allegations and would assess the petitions to establish whether the matter falls within its legal mandate.
The OSP will also determine whether the circumstances warrant further investigative action after completing its assessment.
The development adds a new dimension to the escalating dispute between Afenyo-Markin and Sammy Gyamfi.
Sammy Gyamfi has accused Afenyo-Markin of extortion, allegations the Minority Leader has categorically denied.
Afenyo-Markin has indicated that he is considering legal action against the GoldBod CEO over what he considers defamatory allegations.
The dispute has unfolded amid a wider political and economic controversy over reported GH¢22 billion losses, equivalent to about US$1.7 billion, allegedly associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
Afenyo-Markin and the Minority Caucus have raised questions about the reported losses and the role of GoldBod in Ghana’s gold transactions.
GoldBod has rejected criticism of its operations and defended its position in the ongoing debate.
Meanwhile, the United Party has separately petitioned the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security agencies to investigate the extortion allegations involving Afenyo-Markin.
The petition was filed by the party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
The latest petitions mean the allegations are now attracting attention from multiple state institutions and political actors.
The OSP, however, stressed that its current action is an assessment of the petitions and has not indicated that it has opened a formal investigation.
Any decision on further action will depend on the outcome of the agency’s assessment and whether the matter falls within its statutory jurisdiction.
