New security measures take effect for today Tuesday, October 22, 2024 proceedings at Parliament, as the House announces a series of strict protocols to ensure the safety of MPs, staff, and the Speaker.
Parliament is taking every step necessary to protect the Speaker, Members of Parliament, and all personnel during these sessions, according to a directive issued on Monday from the Marshall’s department.
All MPs, staff, and press members are expected to undergo thorough screening before entering the Chamber.
The new rules also specify that bodyguards will not be allowed inside, and vehicles are prohibited from parking around the Grand Arena.
“These precautions are not only for the protection of our Honourable Members but also to ensure the smooth functioning of parliamentary business,” the directive said.
Members of Parliament are expected to be dropped off at designated zones within the precincts of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), with directions being provided by the Ghana Police Service.
MPs and the press are also expected to wear their identification tags for access, which will begin at 8:00 AM.
The public, however, will not be permitted into the gallery until further notice.
“We count on the cooperation of all MPs, staff, and press members to maintain order and security,” the statement said.
The enhanced security measures come amid heightened concerns over safety, though officials have not elaborated on any specific threats.
