Several parts of Ghana were plunged into darkness in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026, following a widespread power outage across multiple regions.
In Accra, communities including Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta and Oyarifa were among the areas affected.
Residents in several of the affected communities reported that the power outage began at about 4:15 a.m., disrupting early-morning activities and raising fresh concerns about the reliability of Ghana’s electricity supply.

The outage was also reported in other parts of the country, including Aburi in the Eastern Region and areas in the Central and Ashanti regions.
As of the time of publication, the immediate cause of the widespread power outage had not been officially disclosed.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other power sector agencies had yet to provide details on what triggered the disruption or indicate when electricity supply would be fully restored to all affected communities.
Thursday’s disruption is the second major nationwide blackout reported in less than a month, following a similar incident on July 29, 2026.
The July blackout occurred at around the same time of day and affected several communities in Accra, Tema and Kasoa, as well as parts of the Ashanti and Eastern regions.
The recurrence of the disruptions is expected to intensify public concerns over the stability of Ghana’s national power grid and the reliability of electricity supply.
For households, businesses and essential service providers, unexpected outages can disrupt operations, damage sensitive equipment and create additional costs, particularly when they persist for several hours.
The latest incident has renewed attention on the need for timely communication from power sector authorities whenever major disruptions occur.
The power outage also comes at a time when electricity reliability remains a major concern for businesses and households that depend on a stable supply for daily activities.
Further updates are expected from GRIDCo, ECG and other relevant authorities as investigations into the cause of the disruption continue.
