Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam has secured a decisive re-election as General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, winning nearly 90 per cent of the valid votes cast at the church’s 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting.

The election was held at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region on Friday, August 21, 2026, with Rev. Wengam polling 3,727 votes, representing 89.61 per cent, to defeat Rev. Dr. Kwame B. Bansah of Charity Assemblies of God in the Adenta District of the Accra West Region, who obtained 432 votes, representing 10.39 per cent.

The result gives Rev. Wengam another four-year term as General Superintendent and completes the election of the church’s top leadership team.

Rev. Wengam, who is also Head Pastor of Cedar Mountain Chapel in East Legon, recorded a significant increase in electoral support compared with his first election four years ago.

“Four years ago, you gave me 61 per cent. Four years later, you gave me almost 90 per cent,” Rev. Wengam said after being declared elected.

Wengam wins with overwhelming mandate

A total of 4,159 valid votes were recorded in the General Superintendent contest, while seven ballots were rejected, bringing the total number of votes cast to 4,166.

Rev. Wengam described the election as peaceful, fair, and transparent, despite the potential for competition to create tension within the church.

He urged members to put the election behind them and unite around the broader mission of Assemblies of God, Ghana.

“After competition comes cooperation,” he declared. “The competition for the highest position in Assemblies of God, Ghana, is over. A gigantic task to build the church remains.”

He also thanked members who supported his opponent, saying their participation was an important part of the church’s democratic process.

New Assemblies of God leadership elected

Rev. Dr. Kwadwo Bempah of Holy Hill Chapel in the Adabraka District of Accra West Region was elected Assistant General Superintendent.

Rev. Mrs Esther Oduro Dwomo was elected National Women’s Ministries Director, while Silas Amankwaah retained his position as National Men’s Ministry Director without opposition.

Rev. Michael K. N. Atisu and Rev. Henry Kyei Mensah also retained their respective positions as National Sunday School Ministry Director and National Youth Ministries Director.

New appointments announced

The church also announced new appointments following the elections.

Rev. Boniface Keelson has been appointed Foreign Missions Director, while Rev. Aaron Lambon Fant, who was adjudged the Best Church Planter at the event, has been appointed Home Missions Director.

The appointments form part of the leadership arrangements expected to guide Assemblies of God, Ghana, over the next four years.

Wengam outlines second-term priorities

In his acceptance speech, Rev. Wengam pledged to serve the members of Assemblies of God, Ghana, with renewed commitment, humility and dedication.

“To all who endorsed me with your precious votes, you will never regret your sacred decision,” he said.

He called on elected and non-elected leaders, pastors, deacons, deaconesses, departmental leaders and members across the country to work together to advance the church.

Rev. Wengam said his second term would focus on the church’s transformation agenda and the implementation of major strategic initiatives.

One of the key projects he highlighted is the Centenary City Project, which is being developed to commemorate 100 years of Assemblies of God, Ghana.

“The Centenary City Project to mark our 100 years will certainly materialise in our lifetime,” he said.

He also reaffirmed the church’s commitment to evangelism under the MM33 agenda of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, to reach communities across Ghana with the Gospel.

“We are determined to evangelise the entire nation and reach every village, every town and every city with the Gospel,” Rev. Wengam stated.

He said the church would also maximise the talents, skills and human resources within its membership to strengthen its ministry and national impact.

“Leadership is about turning bold ideas into shared progress,” he said.

Ghana to host historic World Assemblies of God Congress

Rev. Wengam also drew attention to the upcoming World Assemblies of God Fellowship Congress, scheduled for Ghana from October 14 to 16, 2026.

According to him, the congress will be the first of its kind to be hosted in Africa.

He urged pastors and members of Assemblies of God, Ghana, to actively participate in the event, particularly the evening programmes scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium.

“Hosting an event of global significance comes with enormous responsibilities,” he said, calling for strong mobilisation and participation across the country.

Wengam calls for unity after election

The re-elected General Superintendent used his acceptance speech to call for reconciliation and unity among members following the election.

He urged members to “bury the past, strengthen the bridges of unity and move forward with the love of Christ.”

Reflecting on his own leadership journey, Rev. Wengam recalled losing an election for a regional secretary position in 2014.

He said the setback eventually helped him understand that leadership opportunities could emerge at the appropriate time.

“I thank God I didn’t become regional secretary at the time. It wasn’t the time,” he said.

He encouraged ministers and members who lost in the elections not to become discouraged.

“You don’t need to be an Executive Presbytery member. You don’t need to be a district pastor. God can catapult you from anywhere once you remain faithful and committed,” he noted.

Rev. Wengam also expressed gratitude to his family, including his late parents, and thanked his wife, Lady Mrs Monica Wengam, for her support.

He further commended the outgoing Executive Presbytery, newly elected leaders, Elections Committee and delegates for their contribution to the electoral process.

Pastors urged to keep God’s fire burning

Following the declaration of the election results and announcement of the new appointments, Rev. Gregg T. Johnson, the main speaker for the event, urged pastors of Assemblies of God, Ghana, to keep God’s fire burning.

He explained that the fire represents the presence of God and encouraged ministers to remain committed to their calling.

Rev. Wengam subsequently led prayers for fresh spiritual fire across Assemblies of God, Ghana, as well as prayers for the continued growth and transformation of the church.

He also prayed for God’s glory to manifest among the congregation and offered prayers for the sick, past Executive Presbytery members, and the newly elected leadership.

Rev. Wengam was supported by the newly elected Assistant General Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Kwadwo Bempah, during prayers for the sick.

The peaceful conclusion of the 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting marks the beginning of a new four-year leadership term for Rev. Wengam and the newly elected Executive Presbytery of Assemblies of God, Ghana.
