Former Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to adopt a structured and thoughtful approach to reclaim the party’s foundational ideals and restore its vision.
In a statement titled “Taking Our Party Back — Step One,” Agyarko stressed the pressing need for reforms while cautioning against repeating the missteps of the past.
“The clarifying effects of election 2024 are manifesting themselves,” he noted, pointing out that the party’s recent setbacks have sparked widespread calls for a “rescue” mission.
Although supportive of the reform agenda, Agyarko warned against fragmented and reactionary efforts, advocating instead for a cohesive and deliberate strategy.
Reflecting on past challenges, he recounted a “grand conspiracy” in 2009 that, under the guise of reform, centralized power in the hands of a single individual, creating what he referred to as a “Caesar.”
“In response to a similar situation, albeit less humiliating, there arose a grand conspiracy in 2009 that seized the party and put it in the hand of one man, creating a ‘Caesar’ thereby. The current clamour seeks to undo the effects of ‘Caesar’ on the fortunes of our party,” he stated.
Agyarko emphasized the importance of learning from history, warning against a cycle of repeated errors. “People who forget their history keep making the same mistakes and keep having to start over,” he said.
His remarks come at a critical moment for the NPP, as the party grapples with its future direction and the need for unity in the wake of electoral challenges.
