Teacher unions have suspended their strike following an agreement with the government on new modalities to address outstanding concerns over promotions, salary adjustments, and allowances.
The agreement is expected to pave the way for thousands of promoted teachers to receive their outstanding salary adjustments, with 52,000 teachers scheduled to be paid on October 16, 2026.
Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham, announced that the government and the teacher unions had reached a consensus on the modalities for resolving the issues that triggered the industrial action.

According to him, both parties have signed the agreed arrangements, paving the way for the implementation of the outstanding payments and other commitments.
Under the agreement, the salaries of the first batch of 52,000 promoted teachers will be adjusted on October 16, 2026.
The remaining promoted teachers are expected to receive their adjusted salaries by the end of October, Dr Smith-Graham said.
The timeline is intended to address delays in implementing salary adjustments linked to teachers’ promotions, one of the major concerns raised during engagements between the government and the unions.
The agreement also provides for payments under the collective agreement to take effect from January 2027.
Dr Smith-Graham further disclosed that the arrangement includes new allowances for teachers, although details of the allowances were not immediately made available.
The commitments form part of the broader agreement between the government and the teacher unions to resolve outstanding employment and remuneration concerns.
The suspension of the strike follows negotiations aimed at finding a resolution to the issues that led teachers to withdraw their services.
With the agreed modalities now signed, both parties are expected to follow the implementation schedule for the outstanding salary adjustments and other benefits.
The suspension of the strike signals a breakthrough in negotiations between the government and the teacher unions, with the agreed payment dates providing a timeline for addressing the concerns of promoted teachers.
The first payment milestone is October 16, when 52,000 promoted teachers are expected to receive their adjusted salaries. The remaining promoted teachers are scheduled to receive their adjustments by the end of the month.
Payments under the collective agreement are expected to begin in January 2027.
The implementation of the agreed measures will be key to resolving the outstanding issues and sustaining industrial harmony between the government and teachers.
The agreement provides a framework for addressing the concerns over promotions, salaries and allowances that led to the strike, while the unions’ suspension of the industrial action allows efforts to resolve the outstanding matters to continue.
