The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns about irregularities in Ghana’s voter register, urging a forensic audit and a parliamentary investigation into the issue.
Mr. Philemon Laar, a legal practitioner and member of the NDC Communications team, clarified that the party is not in conflict with the Electoral Commission (EC), but rather acting on concerns raised by the public.
“It’s not the case that the NDC is fighting the EC. It is the people of Ghana who have found logical, valid reasons why the EC so far has not lived up to expectations,” Mr. Laar explained.
Speaking during an interview on GHOne TV on Thursday he emphasized that the EC’s credibility is at risk, particularly due to the appointment of politically exposed individuals to the commission.
“If you appoint a politically exposed person to go and be one of the commissioners of the electoral commission, that alone is enough basis for anyone to doubt the credibility of the EC,” he said.
The NDC has flagged several issues, including missing names, unauthorized transfers, and unqualified voters appearing in the voter register.
“There are several people who have registered at specific polling stations, and when they go back there, their names are not on the register,” Mr. Laar stated.
The party is calling on the EC to engage stakeholders to ensure the credibility of the upcoming elections.
“There is no peace without justice,” Mr. Laar stated and urged major stakeholders, including the Peace Council, Christian Council, and civil society, to address the issue publicly.
According to him, the NDC’s position is clear: “We are demanding a parliamentary investigation and forensic audit into the discrepancies in the voter’s register,” he added.
