Outgoing Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has slammed the newly established Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, describing it as unnecessary and potentially disruptive to governance.
Speaking during his final remarks as Majority Leader of the 8th Parliament on Monday January 6, Afenyo-Markin dismissed the initiative as lacking constitutional backing and accused it of being politically motivated.
“This committee is nothing more than a wild goose chase. It has no constitutional basis and could easily be misused as a tool for personal vendetta. We already have state institutions mandated to fight corruption. However dissatisfied we may be with their performance, the solution is to strengthen them—not create parallel structures.” he stated.
Formation of ORAL
President-elect John Dramani Mahama announced the formation of ORAL during his campaign, pledging to recover alleged state resources looted during the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.
The five-member committee, chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, includes notable figures such as former Auditor-General Daniel Domelovo, retired Commissioner of Police Nathaniel Kofi Boakye, legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, and investigative journalist Raymond Archer.
Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns that ORAL’s operations could instill fear and harassment among public officials, undermining governance and due process.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “We don’t need any so-called ORAL. We must allow the due process of law to take effect. Chasing people into their homes under the guise of recovering loot will only destabilize the country. Let’s support our existing institutions to do their job.”
