The Minority Leader in Parliament has urged Ghanaian politicians to draw inspiration from the exemplary relationship between the Jinapor brothers, despite their differing political affiliations.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin stressed the Jinapor brothers as a symbol of hope for Ghana, emphasizing that politics should never drive people to extremes or create unnecessary divisions.
Addressing Parliament during the motion for the adoption of the Appointments Committee’s report on President John Dramani Mahama’s nominees on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of fostering unity and mutual respect among politicians while avoiding divisive practices.
Jinapor brothers
The cordial relationship between John Abdulai Jinapor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, and Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Damongo, he said, serves as a valuable example for all Ghanaians.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin criticized politicians who engage in confrontational and divisive tactics during electioneering periods and beyond.
He said, “Those who lead thugs to collation centers, to insult, to threaten, yet they know they are members of Parliament, should remember that we are in this together. Learn from these brothers. Politics should not make you forget that we are all friends.”
“Mr. Speaker, Ghanaians should watch this: the policies we pursue should not divide families.
He added that the brothers’ ability to maintain a strong bond despite being on opposing political sides should serve as a reminder of the shared responsibility of lawmakers to work together for Ghana’s development.
He urged his colleagues to avoid unnecessary confrontations that undermine the essence of their roles as representatives of the people.
Speaking about the nominee, Afenyo-Markin lauded the Energy Minister-designate John Jinapor for his affable nature and the potential he brings to the Energy Ministry.
“Our respected colleague, John Jinapor, who is going to the Energy Ministry, is such an affable fellow,” he stated.
