Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama not to turn himself into a tool for political football.

According to him, the role of the governor of the central bank is critical to the economy of this country and warned against politicising the office of the governor.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, during Dr. Asiama’s appearance to discuss the controversial cost of the BoG’s new headquarters, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for impartiality in addressing the central bank’s operations.

He urged Dr. Asiama to uphold the independence of his office and steer clear of political entanglements.

He reminded the House of President John Mahama’s 2015 State of the Nation Address, which criticized the BoG’s lax supervision of the banking sector.

“The governor today was the deputy governor then. Are we now selectively deciding which issues the governor should address?” Afenyo-Markin queried, cautioning against biased scrutiny of the central bank’s actions.

The Minority leader called on the Majority in Parliament to handle economic discussions with care, warning that their approach could have far-reaching implications for the nation’s financial health.
