Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused national security operatives, led by Richard Jakpa, of stealing GH₵10,000 in cash and jewelry during a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the raid at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home failed to uncover incriminating evidence, but GH₵10,000 placed on his bed went missing. Additionally, the operatives allegedly stole earrings and necklaces belonging to the governor’s wife.

Speaking to the media in Parliament on Thursday, March 20, the Minority Leader disclosed that three official vehicles belonging to Dr. Addison were also confiscated, only to be later abandoned at an undisclosed location.

“Three official vehicles of the governor were taken away, only for him to be informed later that they had been parked somewhere, and he should send his drivers to pick them up,” he revealed.

Afenyo-Markin condemned the operatives’ actions, particularly the dismantling of CCTV cameras before searching. “If they knew they were on a lawful path, why dismantle the CCTV monitor? Why take it away?” he questioned.

Political raids

He recalled a similar raid on the home of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and warned against the abuse of power by security agencies, accusing the government of fostering an atmosphere of intimidation and lawlessness.

“This undermines investor confidence in the country and leads to capital flight. If investors see these things happening to appointees, they will pull out. Even the citizens of Ghana will not feel safe,” he cautioned.

Afenyo-Markin appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to prevent such incidents from tarnishing his legacy. He described Mahama as a moderate and respected politician who should ensure fairness under his leadership.

The Minority Leader also criticized the recent arrest of controversial broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, who was allegedly apprehended forcefully before being released the same night.

“Although he was released last night, we strongly protest his arrest by state security operatives in Rambo style. Let’s enforce the laws with a human face,” he urged.

Afenyo-Markin expressed solidarity with Dr. Addison and his family and encouraged them to stay strong despite the ordeal.
