The Minority in Parliament has issued a terse warning over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Bawku, urging the government to act swiftly to prevent further bloodshed and humanitarian disaster.

At a press briefing on Friday, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Interior and Defence Committee, painted a grim picture of the escalating violence in the troubled town.

He stressed a surge in brutal attacks—including shootings, arson, and targeted home invasions—that have left many dead or unaccounted for.

“The violence in Bawku is spiraling out of control. What we are witnessing now is not just sporadic clashes but well-coordinated assaults with increasingly sophisticated weapons,”  Rev. Ntim Fordjour declared.

Recent incidents, such as the attack on a passenger bus and the torching of Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga’s home, have heightened fears that the conflict is entering a dangerous new phase.

The Minority warned that Bawku’s strategic position as a border town means the unrest could destabilize neighboring regions, with violence already spilling into the North East and Ahafo areas.

“This is no longer just Bawku’s problem—it’s a national security threat. If left unchecked, the repercussions could be catastrophic,”  Rev. Fordjour stressed.

The crisis has also crippled essential services, with schools shut down, healthcare facilities overwhelmed, and professionals refusing postings over safety concerns.

“The people of Bawku are living in fear, cut off from basic services. This is a humanitarian emergency,” he said.

Slamming the government’s response as inadequate, the Minority called for a more decisive and comprehensive strategy and warning that empty promises and temporary measures won’t cut it anymore.”

Rev. Fordjour insisted, “The government must act now—before more lives are lost.”

As tensions continue to flare, the Minority warned the time for action is running out.
