The Effutu State has bestowed the revered title of ‘Osahen’ upon Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu in a momentous cultural revival.
This historic conferment marks the reintroduction of the prestigious position after a 300-year intermission.
A statement issued on Sunday announced the MP’s new traditional designation: ‘Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.’

The Osahen serves as the Chief Warrior of the Effutu State, a vital role responsible for ensuring peace and coordination between the two traditional Asafo groups—Tuafo and Dentsefo—while acting as the essential liaison with the Paramount Chief (Oma Odefe) of the state.
According to the statement, the Osahen is tasked with promoting unity, supervising dispute resolutions, and safeguarding the welfare of the Asafo Companies.
In addition to these responsibilities, he will also oversee ceremonial duties such as preparing for royal events and ensuring the smooth running of state functions.
In his inaugural speech during a grand ceremony rich in tradition and symbolism, Hon. Afenyo-Markin expressed profound appreciation to the people of Effutu and the Paramount Chief for the honour bestowed on him.
“This is more than a title—it is a sacred duty. I am deeply humbled and pledge to uphold the values of our heritage, strengthen unity, and promote peace across our beloved Effutu State.”
“I am inspired by the confidence my people have shown in me. Together, we will build a stronger, more united Effutu,” he declared.
Although not a chieftaincy title in the conventional sense, the Osahen role carries significant traditional authority and protocol significance. When present, all Asafo-related matters must be channelled through him to the Paramount Chief, underscoring his critical function in state governance.
The revival of the Osahen position is widely celebrated as a key milestone in the cultural renaissance of the Effutu State. With Osahen Afenyo-Markin now at the helm, there is renewed optimism for enhanced cohesion, tradition, and leadership.
