Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declined calls to refer Effiduase-Asokore MP, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, to the Privileges Committee following a heated standoff in Parliament on Tuesday.

The clash erupted after First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor blocked Dr. Afriyie’s attempt to make an urgent statement on the ongoing nurses’ strike, which has crippled health services nationwide since June 4.

Dr. Afriyie, Ranking Member on the Health Committee, defied the Speaker’s ruling, prompting his forceful removal and sparking outrage among Minority MPs.

Bagbin, addressing the House Wednesday, acknowledged the seriousness of the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) but cautioned Dr. Afriyie for ignoring parliamentary procedure.

“Urgent matters must go through leadership. The title ‘Honourable’ is not ornamental,” Bagbin said, calling for decorum and respect for the Speaker’s chair.

He condemned the disruption but ruled out disciplinary action—urging MPs to uphold the dignity of Parliament.
