The Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its support behind Paul Afoko, affirming confidence in his leadership abilities and track record in party organisation.
At a high-level consultation in Kumasi, the elders described Afoko as a household name within the party, crediting him with strategies that previously strengthened the NPP’s electoral fortunes.
Participants at the meeting noted that his organisational skills had translated into tangible political gains, especially during critical periods of party restructuring.

Amid concerns over declining support for the NPP in the northern parts of the country, the Council of Elders urged Afoko to take up a leading role in revitalising the party’s base in those regions.
They specifically called on him to collaborate closely with the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, to rebuild momentum and reposition the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“We have experienced your leadership, and we know your capabilities,” the Council stated, adding that the priority is to bring the north home and strengthen unity within the party.
In response, Afoko expressed appreciation for the endorsement and reaffirmed his commitment to the NPP despite past internal challenges.
He acknowledged the strategic importance of the Ashanti Region, describing it as the heartbeat of the party, and emphasized his willingness to engage and work with party stakeholders at all levels.
Afoko also called for unity within the party, urging members to avoid blame over the 2024 electoral defeat and instead focus on rebuilding.
“This is not the time to apportion blame. Every one of us must accept responsibility. We cannot sit back and watch the party slide backwards,” he said.
He further encouraged party members to pool their experience and knowledge in a collective effort to restore the NPP’s political strength.
According to him, unity and collaboration remain essential if the party is to return to power in 2028.
