NPP’s confusion over Kevin Taylor

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced the immediate expulsion of controversial broadcaster Kevin Ekow Taylor and former party communicator Ernest Owusu Bempah, citing gross misconduct and sustained anti-party activities.

The decision, issued on Sunday, May 10, 2026, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, stated that both individuals had engaged in actions that undermined the leadership, unity, and integrity of the party.

According to the statement, the two individuals were found guilty of “gross misconduct, anti-party activities, public attacks on the party, and behaviour inconsistent with the values and principles of the NPP.”

The party stressed that the expulsions were carried out in line with constitutional provisions, including Articles 3(5), 4(2)(b), and 12(1)(a), following consultations with relevant internal organs.

It further argued that the conduct of the two had created internal division and brought the party into disrepute, making disciplinary action unavoidable.

The NPP emphasised that the decision was not arbitrary but followed due process and internal disciplinary procedures.

The party added that safeguarding discipline and cohesion remains central to maintaining organisational strength and political competitiveness.

The expulsions have, however, generated internal and public debate following earlier communications from the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah.

Just days before the expulsion, Ahiagbah had issued a statement suggesting that Kevin Taylor had links to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), a claim that sparked controversy within political circles.

The statement also called on President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC to clarify their position on the broadcaster’s alleged conduct.

This apparent contradiction, associating Taylor with the NDC while he was still being treated as a party member, raises questions about communication consistency within the NPP.

The sequence of statements has exposed confusion in the party’s communication strategy, particularly regarding how disciplinary issues are publicly framed.
