The United States (USA) booked their place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle, continuing their impressive run as co-hosts of the tournament.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured qualification with a game to spare and are guaranteed at least one of the spots reserved for the best third-placed teams.
The victory was particularly significant, as it marked the first time the USA had won back-to-back matches at a World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1930.

The Americans achieved the feat without star midfielder Christian Pulisic, who missed the match due to a calf injury.
USA dominated proceedings from the opening whistle, pressing aggressively and overwhelming Tony Popovic’s Socceroos. The hosts opened the scoring for the second consecutive game through an own goal after Folarin Balogun burst into the penalty area from the left and delivered a low cross that was inadvertently turned into the net by defender Cameron Burgess.
The Stars and Stripes doubled their lead just before the break. Sergino Dest’s effort from outside the box took a deflection and looped into the six-yard area, where Alex Freeman reacted quickest to head the ball past goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
Balogun nearly added a third goal in the second half, but Alessandro Circati made a crucial block to keep Australia’s hopes alive.
However, the Americans were rarely troubled as they comfortably saw out the contest to record their first clean sheet in ten matches and continue building momentum in front of their home supporters.
With qualification secured and confidence growing, the USA will now shift their focus to their final group game as they seek to maintain their impressive form heading into the knockout rounds.
