Ghana delivered a resolute defensive performance to hold England to a goalless draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L clash, leaving the Black Stars firmly on course for a place in the Round of 32.

The Black Stars absorbed sustained pressure from one of the tournament favourites and showed moments of attacking promise to earn a valuable point in Boston.

The first half was largely a battle of discipline and defensive organisation. England enjoyed most of the possession and repeatedly pushed forward, but the Black Stars’ backline remained compact and composed.

The Three Lions’ only notable opportunity before the break came when Declan Rice rose to meet a cross, only to see his looping header sail over the crossbar.

England returned from the interval with greater urgency. Elliot Anderson had a close-range header blocked before Anthony Gordon tested goalkeeper Benjamin Asare with a powerful effort. Asare, however, was equal to the task, producing another fine save moments later to deny Harry Kane’s low strike.

Despite England’s pressure, Ghana looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack.

The Black Stars came agonisingly close to taking all three points with just under ten minutes remaining. Abdul Fatawu burst through on goal after Ghana cut open the England defence. Although defender Ezri Konsa recovered to block his first effort, Fatawu’s follow-up attempt was inadvertently stopped on the goal line by team-mate Antoine Semenyo.

England’s best opportunity arrived in the 87th minute. Reece James delivered an inviting cross to Nico O’Reilly, whose header struck the crossbar. The rebound fell kindly to captain Harry Kane, but the striker fired his effort high over the bar.

Benjamin Asare emerged as one of Ghana’s standout performers, producing crucial saves and commanding his area superbly as the Black Stars secured a hard-earned draw.

The result means both Ghana and England head into the final round of Group L fixtures occupying the top two positions. Ghana needs only a draw against Croatia to book a place in the Round of 32, while England requires a point from their final group match against Panama to advance.

For the Black Stars, the disciplined display against England will provide renewed confidence and belief that they can compete with the world’s best as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
