Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Saturday, but the Black Stars’ progression to the knockout stage remains unaffected as they stay in the United States for the next round.
The result saw Croatia leapfrog Ghana into second place in Group L, while the Black Stars dropped to third.
However, Ghana had already secured qualification to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

The outcome also means Ghana will continue their World Cup campaign in the United States instead of travelling to Canada, where the team had earlier encountered visa complications involving vice-captain Thomas Partey.
Croatia entered the match needing at least a draw to guarantee qualification, but Zlatko Dalić’s men showed their attacking intent from the opening whistle.
Nikola Vlašić nearly gave Croatia the lead in the 17th minute when his powerful strike from outside the penalty area crashed against the outside of the post.
The breakthrough eventually arrived just after the half-hour mark through Petar Sučić, who unleashed a stunning long-range effort from about 30 yards that flew through a crowded penalty area before nestling inside the left-hand post beyond the Ghana goalkeeper.
Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances in the opening half, with Antoine Semenyo’s narrowly missed effort their best opportunity before the interval.
The Black Stars emerged as a transformed side after the restart and gradually took control of proceedings.
Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen reacted quickest from a set-piece to slot home the equaliser after Croatia failed to deal with a free-kick.
Just as Ghana appeared capable of salvaging a draw, Croatia restored its advantage ten minutes later.
Veteran captain Luka Modrić delivered a pinpoint corner that found an unmarked Nikola Vlašić, who powered his header in off the inside of the post to seal all three points for the Europeans.
Despite the defeat, Ghana’s earlier victories during the group stage ensured Carlos Queiroz’s side advanced to the knockout rounds, where they will now continue their campaign without the need to cross into Canada.
The Black Stars will now turn their attention to the Round of 32 as they seek to extend an impressive World Cup campaign that has already seen them become one of seven African nations to reach the knockout stage.
