Kylian Mbappe delivered another world-class performance, scoring twice as France comfortably defeated Sweden 3-0 to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The French captain continued his sensational tournament by taking his goal tally to six, drawing level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot and moving to within one goal of Messi on the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring charts.
France, who have looked among the tournament favourites throughout the group stage and knockout phase, produced another commanding display against a Sweden side that struggled to cope with Didier Deschamps’ talented squad.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half after cutting through the Swedish defence before calmly beating goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom.
Sweden failed to respond, managing only two shots on target as France dominated possession and created chance after chance.
France doubled their advantage after the break when Michael Olise set up Bradley Barcola, who unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner to put the match beyond Sweden’s reach.
Mbappe then completed his brace in style, combining brilliantly with Olise before curling a superb finish into the far corner to seal an emphatic victory.
The two goals further enhanced Mbappe’s remarkable record in World Cup knockout football, where he has now scored nine goals in nine matches—the most by any player in the competition’s knockout history.
France manager Didier Deschamps returned to the touchline following the passing of his mother and watched his side produce arguably their most complete performance of the tournament.
The victory sets up a Round of 16 meeting with surprise package Paraguay on Saturday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Based on current form, France will head into the contest as overwhelming favourites as they continue their pursuit of another FIFA World Cup title.
