Ghana’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to a disappointing end after the Black Stars suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their Round of 32 clash at Kansas City Stadium.
A first-half strike from Jhon Arias proved decisive as the South Americans advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland.
The Black Stars made a bright start and nearly opened the scoring inside two minutes when captain Thomas Partey unleashed a powerful long-range effort that narrowly missed the target.

However, Colombia gradually took control of proceedings, backed by a passionate crowd of supporters.
The breakthrough came after Luis Suárez, who replaced the injured Jhon Córdoba, surged down the right flank before delivering a low cross into the penalty area. Arias met the pass with a composed first-time finish into the bottom corner to hand Colombia the lead.
Ghana were fortunate not to trail by a wider margin before halftime.
Luis Díaz fired wide from close range before goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced a brilliant reflex save to deny Johan Mojica’s powerful header.
Colombia continued to dominate after the restart and thought they had doubled their advantage when Díaz found the back of the net in the 56th minute. However, the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside following a VAR review.
Moments later, Díaz squandered another golden opportunity after firing straight at Ati-Zigi from inside the penalty area.
Despite trailing by just one goal, Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances against Colombia’s disciplined defence and failed to register a single shot on target throughout the contest.
The defeat ends Ghana’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament, while Colombia continue their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign and will face Switzerland in Vancouver on July 7 for a place in the quarter-finals.
