Zoomlion Ghana Limited has clarified that its sanitation contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) ended through natural expiration and was not cancelled or terminated by the government.

In a statement issued by its Directorate of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Zoomlion explained that the contract — which covered the Street Sweeping Programme under the Youth in Sanitation module — concluded in September 2024, following a six-month extension from its original expiry date in March 2024.

This clarification follows recent public discussions and media reports suggesting that the government had cancelled the agreement.

“The contract ended as scheduled. It was not cancelled or terminated. Zoomlion has worked with successive governments on this YEA module for over 19 years, demonstrating our continued dedication to sustainable development in Ghana,” the statement said.

As the government prepares to open new sanitation contracts through a competitive bidding process, Zoomlion expressed full support for the initiative and indicated its readiness to participate.

“We welcome the competitive procurement approach and will engage actively, leveraging our proven expertise, innovation, and national footprint,” the company stated.

Zoomlion also pledged its continued cooperation with government accountability measures, including audits and verification exercises.

“We have consistently opened our operations to scrutiny from the Auditor-General and remain committed to transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money,” it added.

Addressing the welfare of frontline sanitation workers, the company praised the government’s promise to enhance remuneration under upcoming reforms. It reiterated its own longstanding advocacy for better conditions for these workers.

“Zoomlion has consistently called for improved wages and conditions for sanitation workers. We are committed to ensuring their work is dignified and sustainable,” the company noted.

On the continental front, Zoomlion revealed that its influence is expanding rapidly, with 24 African countries having signed Memoranda of Understanding, concession agreements, or initiated feasibility studies with the company. These partnerships, it said, reflect growing interest in replicating its two decades of innovation and sustainable waste management.

Currently, Zoomlion operates 36 waste treatment facilities across Ghana, including 18 Material Recovery and Waste Treatment Plants that convert organic waste into compost for agriculture — a feat it described as “unmatched on the continent.”

The company emphasized its alignment with the Government of Ghana’s RESET agenda — focusing on Rebuilding, Equity, Sustainability, Empowerment, and Transformation — and reaffirmed its commitment to national development.

“Our mission is aligned with Ghana’s broader development goals. We are ready to support efforts to modernize sanitation, create jobs, protect the environment, and deliver the highest standards of public service,” the statement concluded.
