Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has dismissed the victory of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary last Saturday, declaring that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is and will defeat him any day.

Ayariga’s remarks, delivered on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday as the House returns from recess, aimed at what he characterized as a desperate attempt by the opposition to repackage a failed administration.

He argued that no amount of political rebranding could mask the economic scars left by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia NPP governance.

Mahama Ayariga rejected the notion that Bawumia’s leadership represents a fresh start for the NPP. Instead, he framed the former Vice President as the co-architect of an era that pushed Ghana to the brink of financial collapse.

Ayariga insisted that voters will judge the NPP on lived experiences rather than slogans.

He said, “You cannot rewrite recent history, and you cannot rebrand responsibility away,” Ayariga stated, emphasizing that Bawumia’s tenure as Vice President is inseparable from the party’s economic track record.

The Majority Leader drew a sharp line between the past hardships and the current NDC administration’s performance.

He highlighted a series of economic indicators as evidence of effective leadership under President John Dramani Mahama, citing declining inflation, a stabilizing currency against major international currencies, falling interest rates, reduced borrowing costs, improved debt management, stronger fiscal indicators, and sustained fiscal discipline

Ayariga attributed these gains to disciplined fiscal management and effective parliamentary oversight, contrasting this with the ideas that pushed this nation to the edge during the previous NPP term.

The NDC, he said, does not fear the Bawumia factor because it is the weakest link for the NDC to crush in 2028 to again retain power.

He asserted that the electorate’s memory is long, and the reality of the pocketbook will outweigh any campaign optics that the NPP is selling to the public.
