Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammy Awuku, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama over the recent erratic power supply, warning of its impact on students preparing for major national examinations.

Awuku expressed concern about the return of intermittent power outages (tagged Dumsor), describing the situation as worrying, particularly at a critical time for candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to him, candidates writing the WASSCE, which began on April 21, 2026, as well as BECE candidates set to begin their exams on May 4, are being significantly affected by the unstable electricity supply.

In a strongly worded statement, he noted that the outages disrupt study routines, break concentration, and increase anxiety among students who should otherwise be fully focused on revision.

The MP stressed that examination authorities will not make allowances for such challenges, making it imperative for the government to ensure a stable environment for candidates.

Beyond the education sector, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser pointed to the wider impact of the power situation on businesses, particularly small-scale enterprises and young entrepreneurs whose operations depend heavily on consistent electricity.

He described the economic consequences as real and increasingly difficult for many Ghanaians.

He called on the President and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, to take swift and decisive action to address the power challenges.

He emphasized that this period represents a once-in-a-year opportunity for students and urged authorities not to allow power instability to undermine their efforts and prospects.

“The frustration is real,” he stated, adding that students deserve a stable and supportive environment to prepare for and write their exams.

Mr. Awuku directly appealed to the government, insisting that the future of young people must remain a priority and that urgent steps are needed to restore a reliable power supply across the country.
