The Government of Ghana has commenced the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals who were stranded in Port Bouët, a municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, following an ongoing demolition exercise that displaced residents and destroyed sources of livelihood.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 12, 2026, the repatriation exercise is being undertaken to assist affected Ghanaians who became stranded after losing their homes, businesses, and means of survival as a result of the demolitions.

The Ministry disclosed that 228 of the affected nationals had already been successfully transported back to Ghana on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

It further indicated that arrangements had been completed for the remaining Ghanaians to return home on Friday, June 12, bringing the total number of repatriated citizens to 327.

The statement explained that all the affected individuals had been residing in communities impacted by the demolition exercise in Port Bouët and were left without adequate accommodation or financial means to remain in Côte d’Ivoire.

To facilitate the operation, the Government of Ghana provided buses and trucks to transport both the returnees and their belongings back to the country free of charge.

The Ministry also revealed that Ivorian authorities have expressed willingness to compensate victims affected by the demolition exercise.

It noted that Ghana is actively engaging with the authorities in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that the promised compensation is paid to affected Ghanaian nationals.

As part of the process, Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to coordinate with relevant stakeholders and monitor developments regarding the compensation arrangements.

The Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians abroad and pledged continued support to ensure the successful return and reintegration of the affected individuals.

It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire and all stakeholders involved for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation exercise.

The Ministry assured the public that further updates on the situation would be provided as necessary.
