The Frimpong-Manso Institute is appealing for calm and transparency as the 2024 elections approach, stressing the delicate nature of the democratic process and urging all parties to collaborate for the nation’s benefit.
The Institute emphasized the importance of fostering trust among key stakeholders to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
It called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to address genuine concerns and consider reasonable proposals to improve the electoral system and build strong bridges of trust with political parties essential for maintaining peace and ensuring that the election outcomes are acceptable to all sides.
The Institute warned of severe consequences if the election process encounters missteps or tensions escalate, stressing that a united and cooperative approach is crucial to mitigating such risks.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced dissatisfaction with aspects of the electoral process, particularly the voters’ register. The party has organized protests at EC offices nationwide, demanding changes.
Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong-Manso, President of the Institute, acknowledged the NDC’s right to express concerns and protest but urged for a balanced approach. “The NDC is perfectly right to ventilate its objections to aspects of the election process and even demonstrate to demand redress of their legitimate grievances,” he stated. “However, we urge them not to overstep the boundaries of their demands and protests.”
The Institute stressed the need for ongoing dialogue between the Electoral Commission and political parties to build confidence in the electoral process.
It cautioned that any slip-ups or undue escalation could pose significant challenges for the nation.
“And we must not, and dare not, tow that path,” Rev. Frimpong-Manso stressed.
