Founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor, has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra, a family source has confirmed.
She died on Monday, October 28, at age 72.
Known for her spirited advocacy for farmers and women, Akua Donkor’s presence in Ghanaian politics left an indelible mark.
A unique political journey
Renowned for her bold and outspoken approach, Madam Donkor captivated the public and became a prominent advocate for grassroots communities.
Her political career began with her election as Assemblywoman for Herman in the Ashanti region, after which she launched her first presidential bid in 2012 as an independent candidate.
Although Madam Akua Donkor was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for eligibility reasons, she remained undeterred, voicing her support for Progressive People’s Party (PPP) candidate, Papa Kwesi Nduom.
She faced another setback in 2016 when a fire destroyed the GFP headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, which contributed to her disqualification from that year’s presidential race.
Yet, Akua Donkor’s dedication only grew stronger as she continued to campaign on behalf of Ghana’s marginalised communities.
Impactful legacy and presidential ambitions
Madam Donkor’s resilience saw her listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Known for her ambitious policy promises, her latest campaign outlined free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services, free education, and better pay for farmers.
Tributes from Ghanaians
Following her passing, many netizens have expressed admiration for her unwavering spirit and extended condolences to her family, loved ones, and GFP supporters. Akua Donkor’s legacy as a vibrant and determined figure in Ghanaian politics will be fondly remembered by those she inspired.
