A tense exchange erupted in Parliament last Friday as Second Deputy Majority Whip Comfort Doyoe ‘confronted’ Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for raising a procedural concern while the House was discussing women’s empowerment.
The exchange took place after MP for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Shirley Kyei, had delivered a statement highlighting discrimination against women and the need to promote women’s progress and participation in Ghana’s development.
As women MPs prepared to contribute to the discussion, Afenyo-Markin raised a separate concern over parliamentary communication and sitting protocols.

The intervention drew a sharp response from Comfort Doyoe, who accused the Minority Leader of disrupting an important discussion focused on women.
“If you have grievances, don’t come in when we women are discussing women’s issues,” Doyoe said.
The Second Deputy Majority Whip urged Afenyo-Markin to allow the women MPs to complete their discussion before raising other concerns before the House.
In her passionate intervention, Comfort Doyoe also defended the role played by a minority female MP who sat in for the Minority front bench earlier in the proceedings when the leadership was absent.
“When you were not there, a wonderful woman was sitting in for the Minority, taking charge of what you are supposed to do. So why are you disturbing women when they are working?” Doyoe asked.
