From Slides to Library: How Some GCTU Students Fail End-of-Semester Examinations

Abstract
Consequently, students cannot afford to approach examination preparation as a last-minute activity.
University students are increasingly exposed to lecture slides, digital learning materials, online platforms and electronic resources. However, access to information does not necessarily translate into deep learning or successful examination performance. This paper examines why some students at Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) may struggle in end-of-semester examinations, with particular attention to the transition from dependence on lecture slides to independent learning through libraries, textbooks, academic databases, revision materials and active study practices.

The paper argues that examination difficulties can arise from a combination of delayed preparation, passive reading, inadequate engagement with course materials, weak time management, limited retrieval practice, insufficient consultation with lecturers, poor examination technique and overdependence on lecture slides. GCTU’s examination framework indicates that end-of-semester examinations form a substantial component of course assessment, while continuous assessment also contributes to the final course mark.

1. Introduction
Higher education is not simply a process of attending lectures and receiving information from lecturers. University learning requires students to become independent learners capable of finding, evaluating, synthesising and applying knowledge.
In contemporary universities, lecture slides have become an important instructional resource. They help lecturers organise course content and provide students with a framework for revision. However, slides are not necessarily a complete substitute for textbooks, scholarly articles, practical exercises, independent reading and classroom engagement.
This distinction is particularly important when students prepare for end-of-semester examinations.
GCTU’s official academic information indicates that its Academic Affairs structures are responsible for examinations, academic records, curricular requirements and related academic processes. The University’s examination guidelines state that courses are assessed through continuous assessment and end-of-semester examinations, with the examination normally accounting for 60% and continuous assessment accounting for 40%.

The central argument of this paper is therefore:
Students who move from “slides consumption” to active, independent and library-supported learning are better positioned to develop the knowledge, understanding and retrieval ability required for university examinations.
The phrase “from slides to library” does not mean abandoning lecture slides. Rather, it means using slides as a starting point and then extending learning through books, journal articles, electronic resources, practical exercises, discussions, past questions and independent research.
2. Background to the Study
GCTU operates within a technology-oriented higher-education environment. This environment gives students access to multiple forms of information, including lecture materials, digital platforms, electronic resources and library services.
The University’s academic calendar is intended to provide students with a roadmap of semester activities and timelines, and students are expected to follow the academic calendar.

GCTU also maintains official regulations and policies, including an undergraduate students’ handbook and academic policy. Its academic policy contains provisions relating to academic guidelines, revision week and students’ examination procedures.

If students have access to lectures, slides, academic calendars, revision opportunities and library resources, why do some still perform poorly in examinations?
There is no single answer.

A common misconception among some university students is that possessing lecture slides is equivalent to possessing knowledge.

Similarly, reading slides repeatedly does not necessarily mean that students can recall, explain, compare, analyse or apply the information during an examination.
Research on learning indicates that spacing study over time and retrieval practice can improve learning outcomes. One study of university students found that greater spacing was associated with stronger course performance and GPA, with spaced retrieval practice being particularly predictive of grades.

Therefore, the problem addressed by this paper is the potential gap between:

The main purpose of the study is to investigate factors that contribute to poor end-of-semester examination performance among some GCTU students, with particular emphasis on the relationship between lecture-slide dependence, library use, independent study and effective learning strategies.

6. Literature Review
6.1 Lecture Slides and Passive Learning
Lecture slides can provide structure and direction. They can identify key concepts and help students organise their notes.
However, slides can also create a false sense of completion.
A student who simply reads a presentation may recognise the material without being able to reproduce it independently.
This distinction between recognition and retrieval is important.
For example:
“I have seen this topic before”
is different from:
“I can explain this topic without looking at my notes.”
The second represents a stronger form of learning.
6.2 The Library as an Academic Learning Environment
The university library should not be viewed merely as a place where students sit quietly.

20. Conclusion
This paper has examined the question of why some GCTU students may fail end-of-semester examinations despite having access to lecture slides and other academic resources.
The central conclusion is that information access is not equivalent to learning.
Lecture slides should be treated as one component of a broader learning ecosystem.
