Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, has slammed Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to recall Parliament from recess, describing the move as unnecessary and an avoidable burden on taxpayers.
Parliament is scheduled to reconvene from Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28, 2026, following the Speaker’s decision to invoke Order 58(4) of the Standing Orders to summon the House for an extraordinary sitting.
Speaker Bagbin said the recall had become necessary to enable Parliament to consider urgent parliamentary business.

Mr Iddrisu, however, disagrees with the justification, arguing that the matters requiring the House’s attention do not warrant the additional cost involved in bringing Members of Parliament back from recess.
Speaking on Citi FM on Wednesday, August 12, the Tolon MP described the recall as “completely unnecessary” and questioned why Parliament could not have waited until its scheduled resumption to deal with the outstanding matters.
According to him, the main purpose of the extraordinary sitting appears to be the completion of the approval process for two ministerial nominees.
The nominees are the Minister-designate for Local Government and the Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.
Mr Habib Iddrisu questioned the urgency of approving the nominees during a special sitting, pointing out that both ministries had operated without substantive ministers for almost a year.
He argued that the nominees could have been vetted and considered by Parliament when the House resumed its normal sitting, thereby avoiding what he described as unnecessary expenditure.
The Minority MP maintained that the recall amounted to a waste of public funds, particularly at a time when government is expected to exercise prudence in its expenditure.
His comments add to the debate over the Speaker’s decision to bring Parliament back from recess, with the specific business that necessitated the recall yet to be formally detailed.
