The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has refuted claims that its staff were responsible for a fire outbreak at a residential property in Two-Streams, Koforidua, following a disconnection exercise.
The company described allegations in online publications as false and urged the public to disregard them.
In a press release, the company explained that the customer in question had an outstanding bill of GH¢6,519.38 dating back to September 2024.
ECG’s disconnection exercise
As part of the company’s revenue mobilization campaign, “Operation Keep the Lights On,” a team visited the property on January 24, 2025, and discovered an illegal self-reconnection.
The situation escalated when the customer allegedly threatened the company’s staff with a machete, forcing the team to seek police assistance.
The disconnection was eventually carried out at the pole outside the property under police supervision. The fire outbreak was reported hours after the team had left the premises.
The company clarified that disconnecting the power supply directly from a pole cannot cause a fire outbreak.
“Disconnection of the power supply directly from a pole curtails electricity supply to the affected premises and cannot, by any means, result in a fire outbreak,” the company stated.
