In a dramatic legal showdown, Ghanaian gospel acapella ensemble Alabaster Box has taken aim at celebrated rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, better known as Medikal, accusing him of copyright theft.
The group claims that Medikal’s newest release, “Welcome to Africa,” illegally borrows the opening 10 seconds of their popular track “Akwabaa.”
On April 8, 2025, Sustineri Attorneys, representing Alabaster Box, fired off a sternly worded letter to the rapper. They’ve demanded that “Welcome to Africa” be removed from all streaming services and physical distribution channels without delay. Beyond that, the gospel group is seeking a detailed accounting of every cedi Medikal has pocketed from the song—covering sales, performances, and promotional efforts.
The letter pulls no punches: “The infringing track must be withdrawn immediately from all platforms, both digital and traditional.” It goes on to insist that Medikal cease all live performances, scrap any marketing tied to the song, and nullify contracts linked to its creation or promotion.
Alabaster Box isn’t stopping there. They’re also pressing Medikal to hand over every contract tied to the song, name every person or company that received a copy, and explain how he plans to claw those copies back. The group wants a complete freeze on anything that keeps the track alive commercially—be it ads, shows, or deals—plus a full rundown of the money it’s raked in and who’s been involved in spreading it.
The legal threat escalates with a warning: if Medikal doesn’t comply, he could face a court-ordered ban on the song’s distribution, a mandate to destroy all existing copies, and a hefty bill for damages.
“Non-compliance will lead to legal action, including claims for exemplary damages for deliberate infringement and all associated costs,” the attorneys cautioned.
As of now, Medikal has stayed silent on the matter, leaving fans and observers waiting for his next move in this brewing controversy.
They have warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to legal proceedings against the artist.
