Karpowership Ghana, in partnership with the Sekondi Naval Base, has planted 3,000 tree seedlings to mark this year’s World Environment Day, reinforcing its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability.

The exercise, held under the theme “Restoring Degraded Landscapes”, saw 100 seedlings planted at the Sekondi Naval Base, where the Karpowership is docked. The remaining seedlings will be distributed to degraded forest reserves and former galamsey sites across the Western Region.

Since 2021, Karpowership Ghana has planted over 11,000 trees in the Greater Accra and Western Regions as part of the national Tree for Life reforestation campaign.

Ms Sandra Amarquaye, Communication Manager of Karpowership Ghana, explained that the event, also guided by the sub-theme “Plant Today, Power Tomorrow”, symbolised the company’s long-term vision of powering lives while preserving the environment.

“This exercise is not just about tree planting; it’s about nurturing a culture of environmental protection,” Ms Amarquaye said. She lauded the Western Regional Coordinating Council, Sekondi Naval Base, and the Forestry Commission for their active support.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nelson, who took part in the exercise, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to reclaiming degraded lands. He stressed that the survival of the trees was as important as planting them.

“It’s not enough to plant—we must nurture. I urge chiefs and community leaders to closely monitor and sustain tree planting efforts in their areas,” he said while applauding Karpowership Ghana and the Forestry Commission for their consistent efforts.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Mr Elikam Kotoko, also addressed the gathering. He acknowledged the damage caused by illegal mining but expressed optimism that affected lands could be restored. He advocated for wider community involvement and called for the creation of forest clubs and forest festivals to promote eco-tourism.

Mr Kotoko further encouraged traditional rulers and media houses to play a bigger role in educating the public and promoting reforestation.

In his welcoming remarks, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, commended Karpowership Ghana for its commitment to greening Ghana. He assured stakeholders that the Navy would protect and nurture the planted seedlings to maturity.

The programme brought together students, religious leaders, forestry officials, and naval personnel—demonstrating a shared commitment to restoring Ghana’s forest cover, one tree at a time.
