Their early pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Julián Quiñones raced onto a through ball down the left before cutting inside and curling a brilliant finish into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.
Mexico continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage before halftime. After another defensive error by Ecuador, Quiñones turned provider, squaring the ball for veteran striker Raúl Jiménez, who made no mistake with a powerful finish.
Ecuador struggled to respond after the break as Mexico controlled possession and comfortably managed the game, denying their opponents any clear opportunities to mount a comeback.
The South Americans’ frustration boiled over deep into stoppage time when Piero Hincapié was shown a straight red card following an altercation with substitute Santiago Giménez. The Ecuador defender was dismissed after appearing to cover his mouth while speaking during the confrontation.
Mexico’s victory sends the tournament co-hosts into the last 16 in impressive fashion and keeps alive hopes of a deep run on home soil.
Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Round of 32 clash between England and DR Congo. Should England progress, they will face Mexico in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
