The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for the 2024 parliamentary elections with its Parliamentary primaries today.
The party, which currently holds 137 seats in Parliament, is set to elect new candidates in areas with incumbent Members of Parliament representing the NPP.
This election cycle is marked by intense competition, particularly in constituencies such as Bantama in the Ashanti region and Adansi Asokwa in the Central region, where sitting MPs are facing formidable challenges in their bid for reelection.
In preparation for the upcoming elections, the NPP has cleared a total of 326 aspirants to contest in 100 constituencies spread across 15 of the 16 regions in Ghana. Notably, the party has no representation and hence no candidates in the Oti region.
In a strategic move, the NPP has already completed the parliamentary primaries, the process of electing candidates in regions where it currently does not hold any parliamentary seats, positioning itself to potentially expand its presence in Parliament in the 2024 elections.
