Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of planning to deploy misinformation, disinformation, and fake news as a political strategy ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections
The Effutu Member of Parliament made the allegation in a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 15, warning Ghanaians and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain vigilant against what he described as “fake news” and deliberate distractions.
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the alleged strategy would be aimed at diverting public attention from what he considers the government’s failure to deliver on key national promises and address the challenges facing citizens.

He claimed that the approach was not new, alleging that the NDC had used similar tactics while in opposition.
“Going into the 2028 elections, one strategy the NDC Government is likely to use aggressively, in its desperation to hold on to power, is misinformation and disinformation,” he said.
The Minority Leader further warned that Ghanaians should expect what he described as “manufactured distractions” as the political environment becomes increasingly intense ahead of the elections.
“Expect FAKE NEWS and manufactured distractions aimed at taking attention away from the important national issues on which the Government has failed to deliver,” he stated.
Mr Afenyo-Markin called on Ghanaians to critically assess information circulating in the public domain, particularly as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2028 elections.
He placed particular responsibility on NPP members, party officers and communicators to verify claims before sharing them and to promptly challenge information they believe to be false.
“We must stay vigilant, question what we are told and refuse to be distracted from the issues that affect us,” he said.
He urged NPP communicators to remain disciplined and ensure that the party’s political messaging is driven by facts and substantive national issues rather than propaganda.
“NPP members, officers and communicators especially carry an even greater responsibility. We must remain alert, disciplined and focused. Check the facts, expose the lies quickly and never allow false propaganda to dictate our agenda,” he added.
The Minority Leader said the NPP should resist attempts to shift the political conversation away from issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians.
He urged the opposition party to keep public attention on what he described as the government’s “broken promises” and the everyday economic and social challenges confronting citizens.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also called on NPP members to promote the political vision of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party prepares for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
“Keep the focus on the Government’s broken promises and the everyday problems Ghanaians face,” he said.
He called for a focused campaign strategy ahead of the polls, stating, “Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028.”
