President John Dramani Mahama has insisted that the constitutional provisions governing presidential term limits are clear and unambiguous, despite a case currently before the Supreme Court seeking an interpretation of the law.

Speaking during his ‘Resetting Ghana Tour’ in the Volta Region on Friday, July 17, President Mahama said he has read the relevant provisions of the 1992 Constitution several times and believes they leave little room for confusion.

“If you ask my personal opinion, I thought that it was clear enough. I have read it over several times. It’s exactly what it says. But if they want to ask the Supreme Court, that is their business,” Mahama said.

Supreme Court Case

The President’s comments come days after a teacher from Kpandai in the Northern Region filed a writ at the Supreme Court seeking clarification on whether a person who has served two separate, non-consecutive terms as President can constitutionally contest the office again.

The suit is asking the apex court to interpret the relevant provisions of the Constitution relating to presidential term limits.

Although the case has generated public debate, Mahama maintained that every citizen has the constitutional right to seek the court’s interpretation of the law.

President Mahama, who returned to office in January 2025 after previously serving as President from 2013 to 2017, stressed that his attention remains on delivering on the mandate entrusted to him by the Ghanaian people.

“I know that the people of Ghana gave me one additional term, and I am going to work to meet the trust that they put in me,” he stated.

He said his administration remains focused on implementing its policies and fulfilling campaign promises rather than engaging in debates over future presidential eligibility.

Work with urgency

The President also revealed that he constantly reminds members of his government that time is limited and that they must remain focused on achieving results.

According to him, every minister has been encouraged to work with urgency to deliver on the government’s development agenda.

“I always tell my ministers, let’s number our days so that we can work harder to meet the promises we made to the Ghanaian people.”

Mahama said his administration is determined to maximise the time available in office by prioritising effective governance, accountability and service delivery.
