A former Ashanti Regional chairman hopeful and a leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah, has made scathing accusations against his party, claiming it is ten times more corrupt than the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a candid interview on the Accra FM morning show, Bawuah mentioned several instances of alleged corruption within the NPP to back his claim.
He recounted the widely reported incident involving former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, where he said a money counting machine was brought to her house, taking 24 hours to count the money in her possession.
“If a sanitation minister could have that amount of money, what about the Minister for Finance or the Energy Minister?” Bawuah questioned.
Bawuah also brought up the case of a recently deceased minister whose lavish funeral raised eyebrows.
According to him, the Minister had been in his position for just three years but had an account balance of $30 million at the time of his death.
He said, “The last minister to die under this NPP government had $30 million sitting in his account and was in office for only three years.”
“His assets plus the cash in his account at the time of his death amounted to almost $100 million. Where did he get that money?”
According to Adum Bawuah, such examples starkly contrast with the financial struggles of prominent NDC figures.
He pointed out the case of former Chairman Ofosu Ampofo, a notable NDC politician who recently had to rely on donations to cover his medical bills in the United States.
“Ofosu Ampofo has been in politics for many years and yet still he could not defray his hospital bill in the US. It shows that the NPP is ten times more corrupt than the NDC,” Bawuah said. ”
The NPP man expressed his disillusionment with the current NPP leadership under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
The current NPP, he said, is not the NPP that was entrusted to Akufo-Addo and Bawumia adding, “They have collapsed and disgraced the party with their greediness.”
He cited several scandals, including the Cecilia Dapaah issue, the National Cathedral controversy, and the Pwalugu dam project, where $12 million has been spent without any visible work.
“Why? Today, the NPP is running after Ato Forson and dragging to the courts for an alleged $2.5 million,” he said.
Bawuah warned that if the government changes, the NPP will lose its appeal to Ghanaians due to the corruption associated with the party.
“This NPP under Akufo-Addo and Bawumia is not the NPP I joined. Some people have hijacked the party, and it’s time for me to tell the truth,” he added.
He also criticized the party elders for their silence, attributing it to the benefits they receive from the current administration.
According to him, eight out of ten party elders would admit that Akufo-Addo has collapsed the NPP but because of the donation they are receiving from the president, they cannot openly admit this.”
Adum Bawuah then gave a grim prediction that the 2024 election is over for the NPP because Akufo-Addo and Bawumia had collapsed the party.
