Ghana’s Ministry of Roads and Highways is grappling with a massive debt load exceeding GH¢21 billion as of December 2024, according to Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza.

The disclosure came during a parliamentary session on February 28, when the minister responded to inquiries about the ministry’s financial health.

Agbodza explained that the hefty sum represents unpaid obligations to contractors, suppliers, and other parties tied to road infrastructure initiatives nationwide.

“As it stands, the Ministry of Roads and Highways owes over GH¢21 billion,” he told Parliament, shedding light on the fiscal strain plaguing the sector.

This revelation underscores the mounting challenges in maintaining and expanding Ghana’s road network, a critical issue for citizens who have long voiced frustration over poor road conditions. The financial shortfall threatens to derail both ongoing projects and plans for new developments, raising doubts about the government’s capacity to deliver on infrastructure promises.

Experts caution that without swift action to address the debt, progress on road improvements could grind to a halt. The minister’s statement is likely to ignite intense discussions among lawmakers, with calls for immediate solutions to ease the burden and ensure the sector’s sustainability.
