A fragile calm has settled over the town of Nsawam-Adoagyiri this weekend, as intensified police operations and a pledge for justice from Member of Parliament, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, work to soothe tensions following violent disturbances that tragically claimed the life of a young resident last week.
The unrest was ignited by the death of 28-year-old commercial motorbike rider Masawudu Issaka on Thursday, May 22. Issaka, from the Zongo community, succumbed to severe head injuries sustained during an alleged assault by unidentified youths two days prior, on Tuesday, May 20. His passing led to immediate protests, with over 300 angry youths reportedly blocking roads, burning tyres, and vandalizing property.
In a decisive move to quell the escalating situation, Minority Chief Whip Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh visited the grieving community on Friday, May 23. Meeting with Zongo leaders, residents, and the bereaved family of Mr. Issaka, he offered condolences and assured them of his unwavering commitment to securing justice and fostering lasting peace. The MP, who also represents the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency, personally visited Issaka’s widow and children, pledging support.
“The pain is deep, but violence is not the answer. I will raise this matter in Parliament and ensure it is given the national attention it deserves,” Annoh-Dompreh urged residents, appealing for calm and trust in the security services.
His visit was praised by residents, including the widow of the deceased, who said, “I just want peace and justice for my husband. We are grateful for the MP’s visit.”

Meanwhile, the Eastern South Regional Police Command has significantly increased its presence, deploying additional personnel from the Formed Police Unit (FPU) and National Headquarters. This bolstered security led to a key arrest on Friday night when Abdul Rauf Salami, a resident of Adoagyiri Zongo, was apprehended at a checkpoint. Salami was reportedly found in possession of two pump-action shotguns, 64 rounds of ammunition, a cutlass, a knife, and a tactical vest. He is currently assisting police with investigations and is expected to face prosecution.
While a history of communal tensions casts a shadow over Adoagyiri, the swift actions by police and the assurances from Hon. Annoh-Dompreh have been pivotal in restoring a semblance of order. Businesses that had temporarily shut have begun to reopen, though many residents remain understandably cautious. Local and religious leaders have joined the call for peace, urging youth to avoid any further retaliation.
