Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has officially assumed office as the 2nd Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), following a decisive victory in elections held during the Parliament’s ongoing session.

The Klottey Korley Member of Parliament secured a commanding 131 votes, comfortably defeating her opponent, who polled 51 votes — a result widely seen as a strong endorsement of her leadership by representatives from across the African Union’s 55 member states.

Her swearing-in elevates her to the Bureau of the Parliament, placing her among the top leadership responsible for steering the direction and priorities of the continental legislative body.

Her election was met with applause across the chamber, with colleagues describing her rise as a sign of growing confidence in inclusive, progressive, and forward-looking leadership within the institution.

In her brief remarks after taking the oath, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings pledged to prioritise democratic governance, health equity, and youth inclusion across Africa.

“My focus will remain on deepening democratic governance, championing health equity, and ensuring that the voices of young people across Africa are heard and represented,” she stated.

Established in 2004, the Pan-African Parliament serves as a platform for elected representatives from across the continent to deliberate on policies that promote integration, development, and good governance.

Although it currently operates in an advisory capacity, the institution continues to push for full legislative authority to enact binding laws for member states.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ new role is expected to further strengthen Ghana’s influence in continental affairs, while supporting ongoing efforts to harmonise laws, promote human rights, and advance major initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area.
