France secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium.
Captain Kylian Mbappe once again proved the difference, converting a second-half penalty to hand Les Bleus a deserved victory and set up a blockbuster quarter-final clash against Morocco on July 9 in Boston.
France dominated possession throughout the Round of 16 encounter but found it difficult to break down a well-organised Paraguay side that frustrated Didier Deschamps’ men for much of the first half.

Despite controlling the game, the two-time world champions struggled to create clear-cut opportunities before the interval as Paraguay’s disciplined defensive display limited France to speculative efforts from long range, none of which seriously tested goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
France returned after the break with greater urgency. Ousmane Dembele came close after firing into the side netting following a quickly taken corner, while Gill produced an outstanding full-stretch save to deny Manu Kone’s powerful strike from distance.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 69th minute when Desire Doué was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot.
Mbappe stepped up confidently and calmly sent Gill the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, moving level with Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot while edging ahead on assists. The goal also leaves the French superstar just one strike shy of matching Messi’s all-time FIFA World Cup tally of 20 goals.
Paraguay, who had stunned Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout to reach the Round of 16, pushed for a late equaliser but France remained composed defensively to preserve their narrow advantage.
The victory sends France into the last eight, where they will face an in-form Morocco side that eliminated co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16.
